Tiny Calms: 5 Gentle Ways to Soothe Your Nervous System
Sometimes calm feels too big.
Like something you have to earn, or meditate your way into.
But calm can also be small
like a sigh,
a pause,
a single deep breath that remembers you’re here.
That’s what we practice inside Shift Happens
finding calm that doesn’t require perfection, only presence.
Little moments that bring your body back to safety, again and again.
Tiny Calm #1: Warm hands
Wrap your hands around a mug.
Feel the weight, the warmth.
Let your body know it’s safe to slow down.
Tiny Calm #2: The exhale
Breathe out longer than you breathe in.
That’s all.
That extra bit of letting go tells your nervous system,
“We made it.”
Tiny Calm #3: Looking for something kind
Find one small thing that feels relaxing to your eyes
a leaf, a shadow, the way the light hits the floor.
Let it hold your attention for a few breaths.
Your brain quiets when it has something beautiful to notice.
Tiny Calm #4: The whisper
Put a hand on your heart and whisper,
“I’m doing my best.”
You don’t have to believe it yet,
just let your body hear it.
Tiny Calm #5: Connection
Text someone “thinking of you.”
Pet your dog.
Look at your favorite photo.
Regulation loves company.
If you want more spaces like this, where calm, connection, and gentle growth come together, you’ll love being part of Shift Happens, my cozy community for calm-seeking humans. 💚
